Background: Psychological distress is a prevalent unpleasant experience faced by many cancer patients. However, the psychological distress among gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients is scarcely explored. Moreover, the association between psychological distress and quality of life in different genders has yet to be explored., Aims: To explore the psychological distress among GI cancer patients and examine its association with quality of life among different genders., Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. A total of 237 gastrointestinal cancer patients completed the distress thermometer and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-General., Results: The mean score of psychological distress of the participants was 3.04 (SD = 2.90). A greater proportion of female gastrointestinal cancer patients (52.8%) had clinically relevant psychological distress compared to males (35.9%). The quality of life was negatively associated with their psychological distress (B =  - 1.502, 95%CI: - 2.759 to - 0.245, p = 0.019) among gastrointestinal cancer patients. Such association was stronger among males compared to females in gastrointestinal cancer patients (Interaction term, B =  - 1.713, 95%CI: - 3.123 to - 0.303, p = 0.017)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that healthcare providers should attach their attention to gastrointestinal cancer patients' psychological distress, especially females. Longitudinal studies could adopted to track the changes in psychological distress and its association with quality of life over time among different genders. This study aims to explore the relationship among diabetes-related distress, social-ecological support, and self-management behavior in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic complications. This cross-sectional study included older adults with T2DM in Shanghai, China, between January and July 2022. The problem areas in diabetes scale (PAID), the chronic illness resource survey (CIRS), and the diabetes self-management behavior for older (DSMB-O) were employed. A total of 264 participants (157 [59.47%] males, aged 71.07 ± 6.47 years) were included; their T2DM duration ranged from 5 to 30 years, with an average of 11.19 ± 6.96 years. The DSMB-O scores were negatively correlated with the PAID scores and positively correlated with CIRS scores. The CIRS scores were negatively correlated with the PAID scores. CIRS had a positive direct effect on DSMB-O, and CIRS had an indirect effect on DSMB-O through PAID. CIRS had a total effect on DSMB-O through PAID. The mediating effect made up 28.89% of the total effect. In older adults with T2DM and chronic complications, chronic illness resources were correlated with diabetes-related distress and self-management behavior. Background and Objectives : Dementia grief in family caregivers of people with dementia refers to grieving prior to the death of the care recipient. It is related to psychosocial risk factors that may have a negative impact on the health of these family caregivers. This study aimed to describe the relationship between depressive symptoms, caregiver strain, and social support with dementia grief in family caregivers of people with dementia. Materials and Methods : A descriptive correlational cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 250 family caregivers of people with dementia participated. Dementia grief was the main variable, and depressive symptoms, caregiver strain, and social support were assessed. Additionally, socio-demographic data were collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and a bivariate correlation analysis and a multiple linear regression analysis were performed for dementia grief. Results : Higher scores for dementia grief were found in women, in family caregivers of patients at advanced stages of dementia, and in family caregivers with a low level of education. High levels of depressive symptoms and caregiver strain and low levels of social support indicated greater intensity of dementia grief. Depressive symptomatology was the variable with the greatest influence on dementia grief. Caregiver strain and social support also related to dementia grief, but to a lesser extent. Conclusions : In family caregivers, depressive symptoms, caregiver strain, and social support are related to the intensity of dementia grief, with a greater influence of depressive symptoms. Moreover, being female, having a low level of education, and caring for a care recipient at an advanced stage of dementia are factors associated with increased dementia grief. Concerning study limitations, the sample was restricted, belonging to a specific region of Spain and to a Provincial Federation of associations. It is necessary to exercise caution in generalizing results due to the sociodemographic and geographical characteristics of the sample.

Background: Little is known about the mechanism between interpersonal stressors and social anxiety in college students. This study was to investigate the mediating effect of interpersonal sensitivity between interpersonal stressors and social anxiety., Methods: The data was taken from a large-scale health-related cohort among Chinese college students. This study used data from the first four waves, including 4191 participants. The latent growth curve mediation model was used to examine the potential mediating role of interpersonal sensitivity in the relationship between interpersonal stressors and social anxiety over time., Results: Both levels and changes in interpersonal stressors were positively associated with subsequent levels and changes in social anxiety. Mediation analysis showed that interpersonal sensitivity mediated the relationship between interpersonal stressors and social anxiety., Limitation: All variables were collected based on self-report., Conclusions: Interpersonal stressor is a significant risk factor for social anxiety, and this association appears to be mediated by interpersonal sensitivity. Background and Aim: Although infertility as a significant cause of marital crises is prevalent almost equally in men and women, infertile women are under more pressure and distress than infertile men. Therefore, this study was conducted aiming to compare anxiety, depression, and stress between couples with male and female infertility., Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 40 couples (n = 80) with male infertility and 40 couples (n = 80) with female infertility were referred to the infertility clinic of Al-Zahra Educational and Medical Center, Rasht, Iran. Eligible infertile couples were selected by convenience sampling method. The data collection tool was a two-part questionnaire consisting of a demographic information form and a short form of the standard Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistical tests at a significant level of p < 0.05., Results: The severity of depression, anxiety, and stress also had a statistically significant difference between men and women. The severity of depression was mild in 57.5% of infertile women and moderate in 40% of infertile men. The severity of anxiety was moderate in 42.5% of infertile women and mild in 57.5% of infertile men. The severity of stress was Severe in 37.5% of infertile women and mild in 40% of infertile men. There was a statistically significant difference between infertile women and men in terms of depression (t=-4.213, df = 1619, p < 0.001), anxiety (t=-7.261, df = 2274, p < 0.001), and stress (t=-9.046, df = 2308, p < 0.001) subscales, and the total scores (t=-7.709, df = 2315, p < 0.001). The depression, stress and anxiety levels were higher in infertile women than in healthy women with infertile spouses. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The depression, anxiety, and stress levels were significantly different between infertile men and healthy men with infertile wives (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that depression, anxiety, and stress were more prevalent in infertile women than in infertile men. Background: Psychological distress during pregnancy is a well-documented risk factor for adverse maternal outcomes. Distress related to the COVID-19 pandemic may further increase the vulnerability of pregnant women to negative mental health outcomes., Aim: To explore the mental health experiences of pregnant women, focusing on mental health outcomes, challenges related to the pandemic, coping strategies, and factors buffering mental health factors during the restricted COVID-19 lockdown period., Methods: A mixed-methods survey study was conducted, examining symptoms of anxiety, depression, and burnout among 21 pregnant women. Qualitative data were gathered through open-ended questions about participants' experiences of challenges, coping strategies and buffering factors amid the pandemic. Symptoms of anxiety, depression and burnout were calculated, and qualitative data was thematically analyzed., Results: Approximately one-third (24 %) of the respondents reported clinically significant levels of depression, 19 % reported clinically significant levels of anxiety, and 43 % reported experiencing burnout. All participants reported distress and emotional burden, including fear, worry, stress and anxiety related to the pandemic. Specific concerns such as fear of giving birth alone, fear of the consequences due to lockdown restrictions, insufficient information, disruption of prenatal healthcare services, and fear of miscarriage were prevalent among the participants. Social support, financial stability, stable relationships, adherence to daily routines, reduced stress and social demands, a calmer daily life, physical activity, and less work-related stress including working from home, emerges as buffering factors that aided women in coping with pandemic-related distress., Conclusion: Healthcare providers should prioritize stability, predictability, and minimizing disruptions to prenatal care. Broad-based screening is crucial to identify women at risk of depression, anxiety, and burnout. Objectives: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the Distress Thermometer (DT) as a screening tool for emotional distress in oncological palliative care patients and to compare the DT with the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System-revised (ESAS-r) and the gold standard to determine the most appropriate assessment method in palliative psychological care., Methods: Data were collected from psychological screening tests (ESAS-r and DT), and clinical interviews (gold standard) were conducted by a clinical psychologist specialist in palliative oncology from January 2021 to January 2022 in an oncology palliative care service., Results: The sample consisted of 356 first-time patients with a diagnosis of advanced cancer in palliative care. The most frequently reported oncological diagnoses were gastrointestinal tract (49.3%) and breast (18.3%). Most patients were female ( n  = 206; 57.9%), 60.4% were married/with a partner, 55.4% had between 6 and 9 years of schooling, and a median age of 57 (range, 46-65) years. The cutoff of the DT was 5, with a sensitivity of 75.88% and specificity of 54.3%. Emotional problems (sadness and nervousness) had a greater area under the curve (AUC) when measured using the DT than the ESAS-r; however, only in the case of the comparative sadness and discouragement was the difference between the AUC marginally significant., Significance of Results: The use of the DT as a screening tool in oncological palliative care is more effective in the evaluation of psychological needs than the ESAS-r. The DT, in addition to evaluation by an expert psychologist, allows for a more comprehensive identification of signs and symptoms to yield an accurate mental health diagnosis based on the International Classification of Diseases-11th Revision and/or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fifth Edition.

Background: Studies indicate a higher level of distress in women than men with cancer, but whether this difference is retained over time is unknown. We studied the frequency and level of distress and fatigue during time according to gender in a cohort of cancer survivors., Patients and Methods: In this prospective study, cancer survivors were invited to undergo a psychological session immediately before the medical visit. Distress was assessed by the distress thermometer, and fatigue was assessed by the ESAS-r scale. Patients underwent follow-up visits to assess changes over time., Results: A total of 305 patients and 568 visits were performed with a median follow-up of 15.8 months. At baseline, females, young age, and breast cancer patients had significantly higher distress. However, there was an increase in distress of 0.29 points every 6 months in males (95% CI, 0.09-0.50) versus no change in females (0.03 points, 95% CI, - 0.09-0.15; p-interaction = 0.01). The different behavior of cancer distress during time according to gender was more evident in subjects aged 68 or older due to increasing physical problems in men (p-interaction = 0.005). There was no change in fatigue with time according to sex., Conclusions: Women, younger age, and breast cancer patients had increased cancer distress at the initial visit. However, women tend to stabilize during follow-up, whereas men tend to worsen their distress, especially because of physical and emotional problems, suggesting different coping capabilities., Trial Registration: The study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05122052., Implications for Cancer Survivors: Interventions aimed at improving recognition of emotions related to disease experience in male cancer survivors appear necessary., (© 2022. Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) and autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP) are pediatric diseases which frequently are associated with cognitive, social and emotional complications and can lead caregivers to important consequences. The aim of this study was to examine the potential psychologic parental distress and the plausible interference with suffering of their children., Methods: We recruited 39 parents of 44 pediatric patients and divided them into two groups: patients affected by SCD and patients affected by AITP. Parenting Stress Index Short-form (PSI-SF) was proposed to the parents. We investigated the statistical correlations between the PSI-SF variables of the test, the patients scores at the cognitive test, the patients age, and the scores obtained at the mood test., Results: The analysis of the parents scores obtained by the test reported that the stress levels of the parents of children affected by SCD are higher than those the other group. The analysis of the data showed that 72% of the patients score was average in the cognitive test, whereas 28% of them obtained a score below average; in the mood assessment tests: 35% of the patients reported elevated scores in the depression subscale; 21% showed an elevated score in the anxiety subscale., Conclusions: The data obtained provide us useful indications about pattern of behavior between the parents and the children affected by chronic hematological diseases. The differences in the perception of the parental distress were associated with children's disease, social problems increased parental distress, which was correlated with depression symptoms of the children.

Long-term changes in caregiver burden should be clarified considering that extended post-stroke disability can increase caregiver stress. We assessed long-term changes in caregiver burden severity and its predictors. This study was a retrospective analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. Patients with an acute first-ever stroke were enrolled from August 2012 to May 2015. Data were collected at 6 months and 6 years after stroke onset. The caregiver burden was measured with a subjective caregiver burden questionnaire based on the Korean version of the Caregiver Burden Inventory. The caregivers' characteristics and patients' clinical and functional status were also examined at each follow-up. A high caregiver burden, which suggests a risk of burnout, was reported by 37.9% and 51.7% of caregivers at 6 months and 6 years post-stroke, respectively. Both the caregiver burden total score and proportion of caregivers at risk of burnout did not decrease between 6 months and 6 years. The patients' disability (OR = 11.60; 95% CI 1.58-85.08; p = 0.016), caregivers' self-rated stress (OR = 0.03; 95% CI 0.00-0.47; p = 0.013), and caregivers' quality of life (OR = 0.76; 95% CI 0.59-0.99; p = 0.042) were burden predictors at 6 months. At 6 years, only the patients' disability (OR = 5.88; 95% CI 2.19-15.82; p < 0.001) and caregivers' psychosocial stress (OR = 1.26; 95% CI 1.10-1.44; p = 0.001) showed significance. Nearly half of the caregivers were at risk of burnout, which lasted for 6 years after stroke onset. The patients' disability and caregivers' stress were burden predictors in both subacute and chronic phases of stroke. The findings suggest that consistent interventions, such as emotional support or counseling on stress relief strategies for caregivers of stroke survivors, may reduce caregiver burden. Further research is needed to establish specific strategies appropriate for Korean caregivers to alleviate their burden in caring for stroke patients.

Police officers demonstrate increased risk of physical and mental health conditions due to repeated and prolonged exposure to stressful occupational conditions. Occupational stress is broken into two types: operational stress, related to the content of field duties (e.g., physical demands); and organizational stress, related to cultural and structural contexts (e.g., interpersonal relationships). Applied police research focuses on physiological activation in operational tasks as a mechanism explaining health risk and non-optimal performance outcomes. However, recent survey-based studies indicate numerous organizational stressors associated with self-reported mental health symptoms. The question of whether organizational stressors elicit significant physiological activity remains unknown. The current proof-of-concept field study tests the hypothesis that police managers will display significant physiological reactivity before, during, and after engaging in reality-based scenarios representative of stressful police management tasks developed from evidence-based pedagogical approaches. A sample of 25 training police managers (7 female, M = 16 +/- 5.3 years of experience) completed 5 reality-based scenarios, including resolving a heated conflict between colleagues, delivering negative feedback to a subordinate, and critical incident command. Significant increases in heart rate relative to rest were observed during all tasks, and in anticipation of several tasks. Greater increases in reactive heart rate were associated with longer recovery times. Sex differences and relationships between objective biological and subjective psychological measures of stress are discussed. The current findings demonstrate significant physiological responses to organizational stressors similar to levels observed during operational tasks, despite the absence of physical or aerobic exertion. Parenting stress reflects a discrepancy between a parent's perception of their resources, the demands of their child's needs, and the caregiving relationship and contexts (Abidin, 1992). Parenting stress can increase the risk of issues in the parent-child relationship, as well as child behavioral and emotional outcomes (Neece et al., 2012; Spinelli et al., 2021). Chronic stressors, such as living through the COVID-19 pandemic, have the potential to increase the demands of parenting and thus parenting stress. Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined parenting stress trajectories of 298 American parents with young children ( M age = 15.02 months, range = 1-34 months) over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also examined the effects of parental mental health on parenting stress, and the effects of parental mental health and parenting stress on child problem behaviors using data gathered through the Prolific survey platform. Parental mental health, measured by depressive symptoms Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-10, anxiety symptoms Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and overall stress levels 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, was related to higher initial parenting stress index-short form. Changes in parenting stress over time were linked with higher levels of children's problem behaviors (CBCL). Child temperament was also related to initial parenting stress. Lower levels of household income were linked with higher levels of parental mental health symptoms and higher rates of parenting stress increases over time. These results highlight the importance of considering the well-being of all family members in child outcomes, and the ways in which different experiences and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic affect parental and child well-being. Objective: To describe the incidence and natural progression of psychological distress after major surgery., Background: The recovery process after surgery imposes physical and mental burdens that put patients at risk of psychological distress. Understanding the natural course of psychological distress after surgery is critical to supporting the timely and tailored management of high-risk individuals., Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of the "Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery" multicentre cohort study (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK). Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery recruited adult participants (≥40 years) undergoing elective inpatient noncardiac surgery and followed them for 1 year. The primary outcome was the severity of psychological distress measured using the anxiety-depression item of EQ-5D-3L. We used cumulative link mixed models to characterize the time trajectory of psychological distress among relevant patient subgroups. We also explored potential predictors of severe and/or worsened psychological distress at 1 year using multivariable logistic regression models., Results: Of 1546 participants, moderate-to-severe psychological distress was reported by 32.6% of participants before surgery, 27.3% at 30 days after surgery, and 26.2% at 1 year after surgery. Psychological distress appeared to improve over time among females [odds ratio (OR): 0.80, 95% CI: 0.65-0.95] and patients undergoing orthopedic procedures (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.55-0.91), but not among males (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.87-1.07) or patients undergoing nonorthopedic procedures (OR: 0.95, 95% CI: 0.87-1.04). Among the average middle-aged adult, there were no time-related changes (OR: 0.94, 97% CI: 0.75-1.13), whereas the young-old (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.79-0.99) and middle-old (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.73-1.01) had small improvements. Predictors of severe and/or worsened psychological distress at 1 year were younger age, poor self-reported functional capacity, smoking history, and undergoing open surgery., Conclusions: One-third of adults experience moderate to severe psychological distress before major elective noncardiac surgery. Background: The study aimed to identify the causes of moral distress in public health professionals associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the potential ways of avoiding or mitigating the distress., Methods: The survey was distributed to all members of the UK Faculty of Public Health between 14 December 2021 and 23 February 2022. Conventional qualitative content analysis was conducted to explore the situations in which moral distress arises, the moral judgments that led to distress and the proposed ways to address moral distress., Results: A total of 629 responses were received from respondents broadly representative of the public health professional workforce. The main situations causing moral distress were national policy, guidance and law; public health advice; and workplace environments. Moral distress was precipitated by judgments about having caused injury, being unable to do good, dishonest communications and unjust prioritization. The need to improve guidance, communication and preparedness was recognized, though there was disagreement over how to achieve this. There were consistent calls for more subsidiarity, moral development and support and freedom to voice concerns., Conclusions: The causes of moral distress in public health are distinct from other healthcare professions. Background: Distress among gynecologic oncology patients correlates with poor clinical outcomes and decreased quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors for elevated NCCN Distress Thermometer (DT) results among postoperative gynecologic oncology patients., Patients and Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of all postoperative visits over a 5-year period. NCCN DT results were analyzed as both discretized values (DT ≤3 = low distress; DT 4-8 = moderate distress; DT ≥9 = high distress) and continuous variables. Patients with a DT score ≥4 were referred to social work. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to compare NCCN DT results with clinical and sociodemographic variables. Statistical significance was P<.05., Results: In total, 1,795 NCCN DT results were included, with uterine (37.72%) being the most common disease site. Benign pathology was known prior to completion of the NCCN DT in 13.15% of patients. Most patients (71.75%) endorsed low levels of distress. Moderate/High levels of distress were reported by 28.25% of patients. Increasing levels of distress were significantly associated with younger age (P=.006), history of depression (P≤.001), status as a current smoker (P=.028), and history of asthma (P=.041). Knowledge of benign pathology was associated with low levels of distress (P=.002). Procedure type and disease site were not associated with distress., Conclusions: More than one-fourth of postoperative patients in a gynecologic oncology practice reported moderate or high distress. Distress was highest among those with malignancy regardless of disease site or surgical intervention. Benign pathology correlated with decreased distress. Identified associations with distress provide opportunities for prevention, early intervention, and tailored counseling.

Remote work (REMOTE) causes an overlap between working and domestic demands. The study of the cardiac autonomic profile (CAP) by means of heart rate variability (HRV) provides information about the impact of REMOTE on workers' health. The primary aim was to determine whether CAP, self-perceived stress, environmental and workstation comfort are modified during REMOTE. The secondary aim was to explore how these indices are influenced by individual and environmental work-related factors. Fifty healthy office employees alternating REMOTE and in-office (OFFICE) working were enrolled, rated self-perceived stress, environmental and workstation comfort using a visual analogue scale and performed a 24-h electrocardiogram during REMOTE and OFFICE. Stress was lower (5.6 ± 2.2 vs. 6.4 ± 1.8), environmental comfort higher (7.7 ± 1.9 vs. 7.0 ± 1.5), and the workstation comfort poorer (6.2 ± 1.8 vs. 7.5 ± 1.2) during REMOTE. CAP was similar during REMOTE and OFFICE. CAP was influenced by some work-related factors, including the presence of offspring, absence of a dedicated workspace during REMOTE and number of working hours. All these variables determined a decreased vagal modulation. The working setting seems to impact the levels of perceived stress and comfort, but not the CAP. However, individual and environmental work-related factors reduce cardiac vagal modulation during REMOTE, potentially increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases., (© 2024. Purpose: This study aims to understand the association between emotional intelligence, perceived social support, and psychological distress (i.e., anxiety, depression, stress) in women with cancer at different stages. Specifically, the aims of this study were to investigate: i) the links between emotional intelligence and psychological distress (i.e., symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression); ii) the mediating role of perceived social support provided by family members, friends, and significant others in the relationship between emotional intelligence and psychological distress; iii) the impact of cancer type and cancer stage (I-II vs III-IV) in moderating these relationships, among Italian women., Methods: The research sample consisted of 206 Italian women (mean age = 49.30 ± 10.98 years; 55% breast cancer patients) who were administered a questionnaire to assess emotional intelligence, perceived social support, and psychological distress. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis was carried out to confirm the hypothetical-theoretical model., Results: Emotional intelligence had a positive association with perceived social support, which in turn prevented psychological distress only in women with early-stages cancers. The type of cancer has no effect on these relationships., Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate a pressing need to screen and recognize women with lower emotional intelligence and perceived social support, as they may be more prone to experiencing psychological distress. For such individuals, our results recommend the implementation of psychological interventions aimed at enhancing emotional intelligence and fortifying their social support networks, with consideration for the stage of cancer they are facing., (© 2024. Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived stress level and death anxiety in individuals with COPD., Method: It was planned with a descriptive and relational screening design. It was carried out with the participation of 132 patients diagnosed with COPD. The study data were collected through Patient Information Form, Perceived Stress Scale, and Death Anxiety Scale. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used in data analysis., Results: The COPD patients' total perceived stress scale and perceived insufficient self-efficacy and perceived stress/distress subscale mean scores were found as 32.75 ± 5.32, 15.81 ± 3.60, and 16.93 ± 2.97, respectively. The patients' Anxiety total scale mean score was determined to be 6.96 ± 3.40. A positive and statistically significant relationship was found between COPD patients' Perceived Stress total scale mean score and their Death Anxiety Scale mean score (F = 4.332, p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Perceived stress level of COPD patients was found to be at a high level, while their death anxiety level was determined as moderate. It was also determined that as perceived stress levels of the patients increased, their death anxiety levels also increased.

Adolescence is a unique developmental period marked with significant changes and challenges. As such, maintaining optimal psychological adjustment is crucial for young people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when their adjustment became more challenging. Self-control is a vital ability assisting individuals to navigate difficulties and stay well-adjusted during turbulent times. While the associations between adolescent self-control and adjustment have been well-documented, parental self-control has been considered to play a more fundamental role in adolescent adjustment. However, this consideration has received scant research. Drawing on the intergenerational transmission model of self-regulation, we examined an understudied yet plausible idea that parental self-control facilitates adolescent adjustment through parents' lower levels of perceived stress/better mindful parenting and adolescents' improved self-control. A two-wave survey study, spanning 1 year apart, was conducted among 426 Chinese adolescents ( M age = 11.6 years, 53.5% boys) and their parents. Parents rated their self-control, perceived stress, and mindful parenting at T1, while adolescents rated their self-control and adjustment (i.e., psychological difficulties and life satisfaction) at T1 and T2. The results of chain mediation model showed that after controlling for demographic covariates and baseline levels of adolescent self-control and adjustment, T1 paternal self-control facilitated T2 adolescent adjustment through fathers' lower levels of perceived stress and adolescents' improved self-control. By contrast, T1 maternal self-control facilitated T2 adolescent adjustment through mothers' better mindful parenting and adolescents' improved self-control. These findings advance our understanding of how self-control is transmitted from parents to offspring and clarify the processes of how parental self-control facilitates adolescent adjustment. Introduction: The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) distress thermometer and problem list (DTPL) is a brief self-report screening measure for use in follow-up cancer care. The aims of this study were to explore the correlations between scores on the DTPL and scores on longer measures of anxiety/depression and health-related quality of life among women treated for gynecological cancer, and to define a cutoff score on the DT representing high levels of psychological distress in this patient group., Material and Methods: During outpatient visits, 144 women filled in the DTPL, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the RAND-36-Item Short Form Health Survey (RAND-36) between October 2019 and March 2020. We assessed the agreement between the DT-scores and the HADS scores, explored variables associated with high levels of distress on the DT, and studied the associations between DTPL-scores and scores of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) from RAND-36., Results: In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis between the distress score from the DT and a HADS total score ≥15 (defining high levels of anxiety/depression symptoms), the area under the curve was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.74-0.89). Using a cutoff of ≥5 on the DT (scale 0-10), we found a balanced level of sensitivity (81%) and specificity (71%) towards a HADS total score of ≥15. The scores of distress and problems reported on the DTPL correlated significantly with the majority of HRQoL function scales from RAND-36., Conclusions: The NCCN DTPL can be used as a screening measure for self-reported distress and problems after treatment for gynecological cancer. A score of ≥5 on DT may indicate high level of anxiety/depression as measured by HADS. Psoriasis is a chronic-inflammatory, immune-mediated disease leading to a state of increased systemic inflammation. Mental comorbidities often occur in the patients and may additionally affect the therapy outcome. Currently, it is unknown whether the disease severity, psychosocial stress or health-related quality of life determines the manifestation of anxiety/depression, or vice versa, in psoriasis. The interplay between these variables during the dermatological treatment of psoriasis remains to be elucidated in order to initiate appropriate psychological interventions and to identify patients at risk for comorbid anxiety/depression. In a prospective cohort study, the impact of disease severity, health-related quality of life and psychosocial stress on anxiety/depression were examined during the dermatological treatment in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis (patients with psoriasis = PSO). Patients were examined before (T1) and about 3 months after (T2) the beginning of a new treatment episode, in most cases by means of systemic therapy. Data were analysed, exploratory, using Bivariate Latent Change Score Models and mediator analyses. Assessments included patient-reported outcomes (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale/HADS, Perceived Stress Scale/PSS, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire/CTQ, Dermatology Life Quality Index-DLQI, Body Surface Area-BSA), at both T1 and T2. 83 PSO patients (37.3% women, median age 53.7, IQR 37.8-62.5, median BSA 18.0, IQR 9.0-40.0) with complete data of HADS and DLQI were included. In the total group, a higher anxiety/depression at T1 was associated with a lower improvement in psoriasis severity in the course of the dermatological treatment (γ BSA  = 0.50, p < 0.001). In subgroups of PSO with low/high CTQ scores, anxiety/depression at T1 had no impact on the change in psoriasis severity. Only by tendency, in CTQ subgroups, a higher psoriasis severity at T1 was linked with a higher improvement in anxiety/depression at T2 (low/high CTQ, γ HADS  = -0.16/-0.15, p = 0.08). An improvement in the health-related quality of life was positively associated with an improvement in anxiety/depression (Pearson's r = 0.49, p = 0.02). Here, the reduction of acute psychosocial stress seems to be a decisive factor, mediating this association (β = 0.20, t [2,60] = 1.87; p = 0.07, 95% CI -0.01, 0.41). The results allude, that the initial severity of anxiety/depression may presumably have an impact on the treatment outcome in the total group. In contrast, analysing subgroups of patients with high/low childhood trauma, the impact of the initial disease severity on the course of anxiety/depression after a switch to a new dermatological treatment could not be conclusively ruled out. The latter results from the latent change score modelling should be treated cautiously because of the small sample size. A common aetiopathological mechanism for psoriasis and anxiety/depression might be assumed with impact of dermatological treatment on both. The change in perceived stress seems to play an important role in the manifestation of anxiety/depression, substantiating the need for adequate stress management in patients with increased psychosocial stress during their dermatological treatment., (© 2023 The Authors. The present study is a systematic review of factors and consequences of parental distress following their children's acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) diagnosis. PubMed, Web of Science, and APA PsycInfo databases were searched. Twenty-eight papers were included, with only three longitudinal studies. Fifteen studies explored factors of parental distress, including sociodemographic, psychosocial, psychological, family, health, and ALL-specific variables. Correlations were found between social support, illness cognitions, coping strategies, and parental distress, as well as contradictory results regarding sociodemographic variables. Family cohesion and the overall impact of illness were associated with parental distress. Resilience factors contributed negatively to parental distress symptoms, and perceived caregiver strain and negative child's emotional functioning contributed positively. Thirteen papers explored the consequences of parental distress, including psychological, family, health, and social/education factors. Distress was correlated with care burden and contributed to family strain, child's symptom burden, and parental protective behavior. Significant correlations were found between parental distress, at diagnosis, and further adjustment of parents and children. Most papers reported correlations between parental distress and psychological condition and quality of life; few studies reported no association. Correlations between maternal depression and child's participation in education and social life were found. Differences on distress were found regarding parents' gender, age, children's group risk, and treatment phases. Longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the phenomenon and its consequences. Future interventions should address parents' mental health needs in an early and ongoing assessment in order to promote healthier outcomes. Background: Surgery represents a challenging medical discipline., Aim: This article focuses on psychological stress in surgery and explains resilience as a protective factor against the consequences of psychological stress, based on selected literature references and own relevant clinical experiences. In this context, the sense of coherence, social support and self-efficacy expectation are discussed in more detail as resilience factors., Method: Narrative review., Results (corner Points): Surgery is classified as a challenging medical subspecialty with a high reputation but associated with diverse and varied physical and psychological stress factors. Stress factors differ individually in terms of requirements (can be overdemanding or underdemanding but also stimulating, relevant to learning and meaningful, thus positively or negatively stressful) and resources (potentially beneficial working conditions, experience, or behavior, e.g., social support, scope for action). Fluctuations within surgical specialties and a high dropout rate during residency training are well known and the causes include high psychological stress. In the case of persistent and at the same time insufficient compensation of work stress caused by a lack of or insufficient resources, these can be associated with mental illnesses. Nonetheless, many physicians spend their entire lives working in hospital or private surgical settings and remain healthy, a strong sense of resilience to mental illness may be fundamental to this. Resilience can be present as a personal characteristic or it can be learnt through a process or adapted through positive or negative influences, thus strengthening the personal characteristics. Overall, data on surgeon resilience or interventional studies in resilience research in the surgical setting are limited and provide another research gap. Resilience training (directed at a sense of coherence, social support, strengthening knowledge of coping skills, positive emotions, optimism, hope, self-efficacy expectations, control beliefs or robustness), also clearly indicated in the "robust" medical specialty of surgery, is always individual and should not be generalized. If the surgeon cannot retrieve sufficient resources due to the stressful situation, stress management with its methods is helpful to reduce the psychological stress and to be able to maintain the performance and health of this person., Conclusion: The consolidation of resilience as a notable aspect of employee management. In collegial interactions, resilience must be based on workplace-based approaches to strengthen coping mechanisms in the face of work stress. Aims: To analyze if midterm improvement in diabetes distress can be explained by resilience, diabetes acceptance, and patient characteristics., Methods: N = 179 adults with type 1 diabetes were enrolled during their stay at a tertiary diabetes center (monocentric enrolment) and followed up over three months in a prospective, observational study ('DIA-LINK1'). Improvement in diabetes distress was assessed as reduction in the Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale score from baseline to follow-up. Resilience (Resilience Scale-13), acceptance (Diabetes Acceptance Scale), and patient characteristics were analyzed as predictors of improvement in diabetes distress using hierarchical multiple regression., Results: Greater reductions in diabetes distress were significantly explained by lower diabetes acceptance at baseline (β = -0.34, p < 0.01), while resilience, diabetes complications, and other person-related variables were not significantly related to changes in diabetes distress (all p > 0.05). When change in diabetes acceptance from baseline to follow-up was added to the model, improved diabetes distress was explained by increasing diabetes acceptance (β = 0.41, p < 0.01) and a shorter duration of diabetes (β = -0.18, p = 0.03), while baseline diabetes acceptance was no longer significantly associated (β = -0.14, p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Diabetes acceptance is inversely related to diabetes distress, and increasing acceptance explained greater improvement in diabetes distress. These findings suggest that increasing diabetes acceptance may facilitate the reduction of diabetes distress. Background: Financial distress is a primary concern for young adults with cancer., Objective: The aim of this study was to identify material resources, physical and psychological health, and workplace variables that are associated with financial distress in young adult cancer survivors., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Cancer Survivor Employment Needs Survey. Participants were young adults (18-39 years of age) who lived in the United States and had a cancer diagnosis. Multivariable linear regression was used to model relations between financial distress and material resources, physical and psychological health, and workplace variables., Results: Participants (N = 214) were mostly non-Hispanic White (78%), female (79%), and had a mean age of 31 years and 4.6 years post-diagnosis. Material resources, physical and psychological health, and workplace variables were all identified as contributing to study participants' financial distress. Among the young adults surveyed, financial distress was prevalent, and an array of problems were associated with financial distress., Conclusion: Oncology and rehabilitation providers should openly discuss finances with YAs with cancer and guide them to resources that can address their financial, benefits, and vocational needs to ultimately improve quality of life.

Background: Parents of children with developmental disorders (DD) or disabilities report greater parenting stress than parents of typically developing children. To minimise this stress, stressful factors need to be known and stress needs to be recognised early. The present cross-sectional study aims to systematically assess and compare parenting stress in families of children with various types of disabilities. In addition, the assessment of parenting stress by attending paediatricians will be evaluated., Methods: We surveyed 611 parents about their parenting stress at the Children's Development Center (CDC). Three questionnaires, including the German versions of the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and Impact on Family Scale (IOFS), were used to evaluate parenting stress. Furthermore, attending paediatricians assessed of the child's type of disability and their perception of parenting stress in a separate questionnaire., Results: Fifty-five percent of all parents reported stress at a clinically relevant level, 65% in the child domain and 39% in the parent domain of the PSI. Parenting stress differed significantly across diagnostic categories (p < 0.01) and was associated with childhood disability related issues of behaviour, sleep or feeding issues. Parenting stress was often underestimated by the paediatricians, especially when the children had disabilities perceived as less severe. In one-third of parents with clinically relevant total stress, paediatricians reported low stress levels. Parent-reported financial problems, social isolation, and partnership conflicts were not suspected by paediatricians in ≥85% of cases., Conclusions: Clinically relevant parenting stress was found more often than in comparable studies. An assessment of parenting stress by paediatricians may be complicated by time constraints in medical appointments, the mainly child-centred consultation, or restricted expression of parents' stress. Paediatricians should move from a purely child-centred to a holistic, family-centred approach to treatment. Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability for persons with stroke (PWS). Difficulty coping with long-term stress for PWS and their caregivers (CG) contributes to their poor health. Variations of chronic-disease self-management programs (CDSMPs) have reduced long-term stress in PWS and CGs. CDSMPs include training for decision-making, problem-solving, resource utilization, peer support, developing a patient-provider relationship, and environmental support., Objective: This study examined whether a user-designed stroke camp addressed CDSMP domains, used consistent activities, and decreased stress in PWS and CG., Methods: This open cohort survey study followed STROBE guidelines and assessed stress at four timepoints: 1 week before camp, immediately before camp, immediately after camp, and 1 month after camp. Mixed-model analysis examined changes in stress from the two baseline time points to the two post-camp time points. The research team reviewed documents and survey responses to assess activities described in camp documents and CDSMP domains across camps., Population: PWS and CG who attended a camp in 2019. The PWS sample ( n  = 40) included50% males, aged 1-41-years post stroke, 60% with ischemic, one-third with aphasia, and 37.5% with moderate-severe impairment. CG sample ( n  = 24) was 60.8% female, aged 65.5 years, and had 7.4 years CG experience., Results: Stress decreased significantly in PWS (Cohen's d = -0.61) and CGs (Cohen's d = -0.87) from pre- to post-camp. Activities addressing all but one CDSMP domains were evident across camps., Conclusions: Stroke camp is a novel model that addresses CDSMP domains, which may reduce stress in PWS and CG. Larger, controlled studies are warranted.

Objective: Ageing populations and poor care workforce availability are causing increasing job demands for home care nurses across Europe. While recovery from work helps sustain work ability and wellbeing, past research has relied mainly on self-reported measures of health, stressors, and recovery. This study aims to examine how objective and subjective job demands are associated with measured day-time recovery among home care nurses., Methods: Heart rate variability recording was conducted for 95 Finnish home care nurses. The study participants documented their work tasks throughout the workday and filled a wellbeing questionnaire. The amount of care time, breaktime, number of different weekly clients, and their care needs were obtained from the survey. The associations between job demands and measured day-time recovery were analysed using multivariate linear regression., Results: The amount of day-time recovery was on average 75 min. The number of different clients during the workday (e.g., care continuity) and higher care needs of the clients were associated with lower day-time recovery. Additionally, something slightly disrupting the course of the workday was associated with increased recovery., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that reducing especially the objective job demands (workday characteristics) can contribute to better day-time recovery among home care nurses. To help sustain work ability and improve wellbeing, day-time recovery can be promoted with better work scheduling that supports care continuity and ensures sufficient care resources and support for nurses with many clients or clients with high care needs., (© 2023. Background: Coping styles employed by parents of children with cancer have significant implications for parents' and children's well-being. To supplement the minimal literature in this area, activism (participation in activities that serve to benefit children with cancer as a group) was investigated as a potential coping strategy. Method: Parents ( N  = 67) of children with cancer completed an online survey that included measures of COPE inventory (COPE), hopefulness (Adult Hope Scale), and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9-item). Participants retrospectively reported their engagement in activism to benefit children with cancer and to benefit other causes, including actions that were taken before and after their child's cancer diagnosis. Relations between activism, overall styles of coping, hopefulness, and depression were assessed. Results: Activism was positively correlated with hope and active coping, but not associated with depression. Participants reported a significant increase in childhood-cancer-related activism following their own child's diagnosis, with 100% of parents endorsing engagement in such activism. Postdiagnosis childhood-cancer-related activism uniquely explained 17% of the variance in hopefulness after other forms of activism had been accounted for. Discussion: Childhood-cancer-related activism is a common activity among parents of children with cancer that has significant implications for parental hopefulness. Parents who endorse an active, solution-focused approach to coping with the childhood cancer experience may be more likely than others to engage in activism. Background and Objectives: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and adolescents, and is associated with stress and other psychological alterations. This study aims to assess psychological and sleep disorders and health-related quality of life in young people with T1DM and to determine the relationship between these parameters and levels of salivary cortisol, a hormone widely associated with stress and several psychological symptoms. Materials and Methods: In our cross-sectional study performed in 60 Moroccan children and adolescents with T1DM, detailed psychological evaluations were performed to assess symptoms of anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep quality and diabetes-specific quality of life (using the RCMAS-2, ADHD rating scale, Pittsburgh scale and the DQoL scale, respectively), and cortisol concentration was measured from saliva samples taken mid-morning. Results: A total of 60 children and adolescents with T1DM were recruited. The mean age was 11.05 ± 0.35 (6-17). The mean salivary cortisol level in ng/mL was 4.7 ± 0.49 (0.7-20.2) and was significantly associated with an anxiety RCMAS2 score for the Worry subdomain and DQoL subdomain "Anxiety". Linear regression analysis showed that salivary cortisol was significantly higher in girls compared to boys ( p = 0.004) (beta coefficient: 3.384 CI95%: 1.137-5.630) and with Hb1AC level as a continuous variable ( p = 0.0001) (beta coefficient: 1.135 CI95%: 0.509-1.760). The other variables included in the model were not significant ( p > 0.05). There was an association between salivary cortisol concentration with anxiety RCMAS2 score for Worry subdomain and QoL sub-domain "Anxiety". Still, a significant ( p = 0.018) association emerged for anxiety RCMAS2 score Worry subdomain and QoL anxiety subdomain ( p = 0.044). Conclusions: Children and adolescents with T1DM experienced significantly elevated symptoms of anxiety and sleep disturbances, particularly in girls, and frequent symptoms of ADHD, particularly in boys. Salivary cortisol concentration collected in the morning is associated with anxiety burden but not with other psychological alterations. Further studies are needed to clarify the associations between salivary cortisol concentration and anxiety in type 1 diabetes in order to propose the hormone as a biomarker for interventions aimed to reduce anxiety levels in these patients.

Background: The earthquakes, which occurred on 6 February 2023, affecting a total of eleven provinces in Türkiye, with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6, and killing around 50,000 people, caused the greatest loss of life compared to previous earthquakes in Türkiye. In this study, we analyse the psychological status of the adult individuals who experienced the earthquakes three months after the earthquakes in terms of different variables., Methods: In this research, an analytical cross-sectional study was conducted by applying face-to-face and online questionnaires to 402 adult individuals who had experienced the earthquake. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), the Dark Future Scale and Doomscrolling Scale were applied. The relationships between variables are discussed in this study using the predictive correlational model., Results: The results revealed that the participants had very high levels of future anxiety and moderate levels of doomscrolling after the earthquake. Although their psychological distress levels were relatively low, as the psychological distress levels of adult individuals who experienced the earthquake increased, their doomscrolling also increased. In addition, as individuals' future anxiety increases, their doomscrolling increases similarly. The mediation analysis reveals that the mediating role of future anxiety between psychological distress and doomscrolling is significant (p < .001)., Conclusion: Individuals are more exposed to negative news streams in negative life events that occur beyond their control and they need to search for information. Increased levels of depression, anxiety and stress lead to more exposure to this flow. In addition, future anxiety is also an important trigger of this behaviour. Doctors facing communication barriers when assessing patients in emergency departments (ED) is a frequent phenomenon, as the global prevalence of dementia and migration have increased. This study aims to explore how communication barriers influence moral distress as perceived by medical doctors working at emergency departments. Twelve doctors at 2 different EDs in Stockholm, Sweden, participated. Answers on communication barriers were collected from an interview guide on moral distress. Informants' responses were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The results suggest that doctors experience moral distress when assessing patients with communication barriers due to an inability to mediate calm and safety and understand their patients, and due an increased need of resources and difficulties in obtaining consent before conducting examinations or interventions. Objective: Individuals with physical disabilities experience distress when faced with the threat of human-made and natural disasters, yet little is known about how to reduce that distress. This study used Protection Motivation Theory to longitudinally test the relationships between psychological distress and disaster-related cognitive appraisals, including perceived threat, emergency preparedness self-efficacy, and response efficacy, in a sample of individuals with physical disabilities., Methods: A nationwide convenience sample of 106 adults completed 2 surveys approximately 5 years apart. Structural equation modeling was used to assess effects of perceived threat, self-efficacy, and response efficacy on psychological distress across the 2 waves., Results: Our results suggest that the associations of proximal perceived threat and self-efficacy with psychological distress remain stable across time, while the effect of response efficacy is variable and may be more context-specific. Importantly, individuals who reported an increase in self-efficacy over time also reported (on average) a decrease in psychological distress., Conclusions: In addition to broadening our understanding of factors related to psychological distress, these results have potentially important intervention implications; for example, to the extent that self-efficacy is a malleable construct, one way of reducing disaster-related psychological distress may be to increase an individual's self-efficacy.

Objective: to assess the effect of cardiovascular biofeedback on nursing staff stress when compared to an activity without self-monitoring., Method: a randomized controlled clinical trial, carried out with nursing professionals from a university hospital. The intervention group (n=58) performed cardiovascular biofeedback, and the control (n=57) performed an online puzzle without self-monitoring, totaling nine meetings over three weeks. The outcome was assessed using the Stress Symptoms and Work-Related Stress scales, and the biological marker heart rate variability. The generalized estimating equations method was used., Results: the intervention had no effect on self-reported instruments (p>0.050). However, there was an effect of time (p<0.050) on all heart rate variability indicators, demonstrating changes over the sessions., Conclusion: cardiovascular biofeedback showed promising results in the biological marker, suggesting that it can be used in nursing staff as a complementary therapy by promoting better autonomic nervous system regulation.

Objective: This study examined how the multidimensional negative coronavirus disease (COVID-19) impacts contextualized the age differences in psychological distress following exposures to tornadoes and the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Data were from a 2-wave panel study conducted at T1 (October 2020-August 2021) and T2 (May-August 2022). Latent class analysis was conducted to explore the patterns of negative COVID-19 impacts based on a sample of 1134 at T1. Negative binomial regressions were performed to examine the age differences in psychological distress at T2, based on the working sample (N = 554), as well as the moderating effect of identified class membership, with baseline psychological distress controlled., Results: Three latent classes were identified: class 1 "low overall impacts," class 2 "moderate overall impacts with high emotional distress," and class 3 "severe overall impacts." Individuals ages 65 and over reported lower psychological distress at T2 relative to those ages 18-34 and 35-49. However, compared to people ages 18-34, 35-49, and 50-64, those ages 65 and over reported the greatest increases in T2 psychological distress if they had experienced moderate or severe overall COVID-19 impacts at T1., Conclusion: There is a pressing need for mental health interventions that are tailored to multi-disaster scenarios and age-related differences in long-term disaster recovery.

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic has increased stress levels in GPs, who have resorted to different coping strategies to deal with this crisis. Gender differences in coping styles may be contributing factors in the development of psychological distress., Objectives: To identify differences by gender and by stress level in coping strategies of GPs during the Covid-19 pandemic., Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey conducted with GPs in Catalonia (Spain), in June-July 2021. via the institution's email distribution list, all GPs members of the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine were invited to complete a survey assessing sociodemographic, health and work-related characteristics, experienced stress (Stress scale of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-DASS 21) and the frequency of use of a range of coping strategies (Brief-COPE) classified as problem-focused, emotion-focused and avoidant strategies, some of which are adaptive and others maladaptive. We compared the scores of each strategy by gender and stress level using Student's t -test., Results: Of 4739 members, 522 GPs participated in the study (response rate 11%; 79.1% women; mean age = 46.9 years, SD  = 10.5). Of these, 41.9% reported moderate-severe stress levels. The most common coping strategies were acceptance, active coping, planning, positive reframing and venting. More frequently than men, women resorted to emotional and instrumental support, venting, distraction and self-blame, whereas men used acceptance and humour more commonly than women. Moderate-severe stress levels were associated with non-adaptive coping, with increased use of avoidance strategies, self-blame, religion and venting, and decreased use of positive reframing and acceptance., Conclusion: The most common coping strategies were adaptive and differed by gender. However, highly stressful situations caused maladaptive strategies to emerge.

Background: Moral distress (MD) refers to psychological unease when healthcare professionals identify morally correct actions to take but are constrained in their ability to take those actions., Methods: This study evaluated the relationship between out-of-hours decisions and MD among 40 Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctors. They were asked to choose the 'expected' and the 'right' management options for five out-of-hours scenarios and complete an adapted Measure of Moral Distress for Health Professionals (MMD-HP) questionnaire., Results: 28/40 (70%) reported discordance between 'expected' and 'right' options more frequently than concordance. The mean total MMD-HP score was low: 64.9 ( SD  = 26.9), range 13-143, maximum 288. The association between decision-making discordance and MMD-HP score was weak., Conclusion: Out-of-hours decisions by FY2 doctors were characterised by doing what is 'expected' rather than what is perceived to be 'right'. Introduction: Healthcare workers in intensive care units often experience moral distress, depression, and stress-related symptoms. These conditions can lower staff retention and influence the quality of patient care. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of moral distress and psychological status among healthcare workers in a newly established paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Hong Kong., Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted in the PICU of the Hong Kong Children's Hospital; healthcare workers (doctors, nurses and allied health professionals) were invited to participate. The Revised Moral Distress Scale (MDS-R) Paediatric Version and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 items were used to assess moral distress and psychological status, respectively. Demographic characteristics were examined in relation to moral distress, depression, anxiety, and stress scores to identify risk factors for poor psychological outcomes. Correlations of moral distress with depression, anxiety, and stress were examined., Results: Forty-six healthcare workers completed the survey. The overall median MDS-R moral distress score was 71. Nurses had a significantly higher median moral distress score, compared with doctors and allied health professionals (102 vs 47 vs 20). Nurses also had the highest median anxiety and stress scores (11 and 20, respectively). Moral distress scores were correlated with depression (r=0.445; P=0.002) and anxiety scores (r=0.417; P<0.05). Healthcare workers intending to quit their jobs had significantly higher moral distress scores (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Among PICU healthcare workers, nurses had the highest level of moral distress. Moral distress was associated with greater depression, anxiety, and intention to quit. Abstract: This study aimed to explore coping strategy profiles used by frontline medical workers and the psychological stress reactions associated with each category, in the COVID-19 pandemic context. Participants were 651 frontline medical workers recruited between February and March 2020. Psychological stress reactions (e.g., anxiety, depression) and coping strategies were assessed and analyzed using latent profile analysis and linear regression. Participants had three coping strategy profiles: coping inadequately (28.9%), coping appropriately (64.4%), and coping excessively (6.7%). Compared with coping appropriately, those who coped inadequately and excessively had higher psychological stress reactions levels. Levels of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in excessive-coping individuals were higher than those who coped inadequately. Our findings elucidate the effectiveness of different coping strategy profiles and provide insights for developing targeted interventions to mitigate stress among medical workers. Background: Maternal stress has negative consequences on infant behavioral development, and COVID-19 presented uniquely stressful situations to mothers of infants born during the pandemic. We hypothesized that mothers with higher levels of perceived stress during the pandemic would report higher levels of infant regulatory problems including crying and interrupted sleep patterns., Methods: As part 6 sites of a longitudinal study, mothers of infants born during the pandemic completed the Perceived Stress Scale, the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire, and an Infant Crying survey at 6 (n = 433) and 12 (n = 344) months of infant age., Results: Maternal perceived stress, which remained consistent at 6 and 12 months of infant age, was significantly positively correlated with time taken to settle infants. Although maternal perceived stress was not correlated with uninterrupted sleep length, time taken to put the infant to sleep was correlated. Perceived stress was also correlated with the amount of infant crying and fussiness reported at 6 months., Conclusions: Mothers who reported higher levels of perceived stress during the pandemic reported higher levels of regulatory problems, specifically at 6 months. Examining how varying levels of maternal stress and infant behaviors relate to overall infant developmental status over time is an important next step., Impact: Women giving birth during the COVID-19 pandemic who reported higher levels of stress on the Perceived Stress Scale also reported higher levels of infant fussiness and crying at 6 months old, and more disruptive sleep patterns in their infants at 6 months and 12 months old. Sleeping problems and excessive crying in infancy are two regulatory problems that are known risk factors for emotional and behavioral issues in later childhood. Sexual minorities are at an increased risk for psychopathology, compared to heterosexual counterparts, in part due to stressors unique to their sexual minority identity. The greater socio-political climate may exacerbate sexual minority stress, and the context of the 2016 United States presidential election infringed upon the rights and well-being of LGBQ individuals. In our sample of sexual minorities ( n = 253), we examined the association between anticipated stigma in response to the 2016 presidential election and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the potential mediating role of self-compassion, hopelessness and social support. Greater anticipated stigma was associated with less self-compassion, less perceived social support, and greater hopelessness, and, in turn, greater symptoms of anxiety and depression. Anticipated stigma may erode feelings of environmental support and may be internalized as negative views of the self and future. From a public health perspective, policy-makers should be aware that the discussion and/or enactment of policies which discriminate against LGBQ persons may negatively impact mental health. Clinically, bolstering self-compassion and interpersonal functioning, and targeting hopelessness, through strategies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion-Focused Therapy, may buffer the impact of minority stress among sexual minorities.

Aims: The study aims to test the Turkish validity and reliability of the Rushton Moral Resilience Scale (RMRS) and examine the effect of moral resilience on moral distress., Background: Moral distress is a phenomenon that negatively affects health workers, health institutions, and the person receiving care. In order to eliminate or minimize the negative effects of moral distress, it is necessary to increase the moral resilience of nurses. Moral resilience involves developing systems that support a culture of ethical practice in healthcare and aim to increase an individual's capacity to cope with moral challenges., Methods: A methodological and descriptive-predictive study design was adopted. Sociodemographic Information Form, Measure of Moral Distress - Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP), and Rushton Moral Resilience Scale were used to collect data from the nurses. A total of 255 clinical nurses were recruited., Ethical Considerations: Hacettepe University's non-interventional ethics committee approved the study's protocol and informed consent was obtained from the participants., Results: The original four-factor structure of the scale was tested with confirmatory factor analysis, and the index values were evaluated and found at an acceptable level. The Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.826. Moral resilience predicted moral distress total, intensity, and frequency levels. A moderate and weak relationship was found in the negative between all sub-dimensions of moral distress and moral resilience., Conclusions: The Rushton Moral Resilience Scale Turkish version showed good psychometric properties. Moral resilience has a reducing effect on moral distress. Young nurses who have less experience are at risk because they have lower moral resilience levels, while nurses working in intensive care units are at risk because of their high moral distress levels. Objective: To analyze the occupational and psychological consequences suffered by healthcare workers who are considered second victims (SV)., Material and Methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study among the healthcare workers of a university hospital. The answers collected in a specifically designed questionnaire about psychological consequences at work and the result of a post-traumatic stress scale, "Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R, spanish version)" were evaluated. The variables between the groups were compared using the Chi square test (or Fisher's exact test) when both were qualitative and with the Student's T (or the Mann-Whitney U test for independent data), when one of them was quantitative. The level of statistical significance was P<.05., Results: 75.5% (148/207) of the participants in the study suffered some adverse event (AE) and, of these, 88.5% (131/148) were considered SV. Physicians had a 2.2 times higher risk of feeling SV than nurses (95% CI: 1.88-2.52). The impact on the patient related to the AE explained why the professionals involved in it felt SV (P=.037). 80.6% (N=104) of the SVs presented post-traumatic stress. Women were 2.4 times more likely to suffer from it (OR: 2.4; 95% CI: 1.5-4.0). Intrusive thoughts in the SV were almost three times more frequent when the damage suffered by the patient was permanent or death (OR: 2.5; 95% CI: 0.2-3.6)., Conclusions: Many healthcare workers, especially physicians, considered themselves to be SV, and many of them suffered from post-traumatic stress. Background: Health professionals can be 'second victims' of adverse patient events. Second victimhood involves a series of physical and psychological signs and symptoms of varying severity and is most prevalent among nurses and women and in intensive care units (ICUs). Previous research has described personal and organizational coping strategies., Aim: The objective of this research is to determine the prevalence of second victimhood, focusing on psychological distress, among Chilean adult intensive care nurses and its relationship with the support provided by their organizations., Study Design: A descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional study was conducted in seven intensive care units of Chilean hospitals., Results: Of a sample of 326 nurses, 90.18% reported having been involved in an adverse event and 67% reported psychological distress resulting from the adverse event. Embarrassment was the most prevalent psychological symptom (69%). Only 2.8% reported that their organization had an action plan for professionals in the event of a serious adverse event. Participants who had spent longer working in an ICU reported more support from their organization around adverse events., Conclusion: Two-thirds of Chilean adult intensive care unit nurses report psychological stress following an adverse event. Introduction: About 15% of the population suffers from tinnitus but only in 2-3% of cases the tinnitus is severe with great functioning difficulties. The distress caused by tinnitus is mostly caused by the reaction to the tinnitus and not by the tinnitus itself., Aims: Methods to alleviate the tinnitus distress are presented with emphasis on the importance of the primary detailed explanation to the patient., Methods: The management of the severe response to tinnitus is based on the ability to control it instead of being controlled by it. This task is accomplished by explaining the essence of the tinnitus and imbuing the patient with control of three things: the way of thinking, the mental stress and attention ability., Conclusions: The methods to mitigate tinnitus distress are presented. The importance of the primary detailed explanation to the patient is emphasized. The treatment is based on providing methods of mastering the way of thinking, controlling mental stress and managing the attention ability using the CBT technique., Discussion: Ear, nose, and throat (E.N.T) practitioners lack knowledge of treatment of the emotional reaction to tinnitus which results in frustration when dealing with the patient's complaints. In this article the basic tools of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatment method are presented, along with explanations about the method with regard to coping with the emotional reaction to tinnitus.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the relative of social support and psychological distress in disease activity among patients with Crohn's disease (CD) in China, and explore whether sex moderates the relationship between disease activity and social support and psychological distress in CD., Design: Our study has a cross-sectional design., Setting: This was a single-centre study, which was conducted in Wuhan, China., Participants: A total of 184 patients with CD at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology were enrolled in this study; of these,162 patients were included in the final analysis., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: The main study outcome was the CD patients' clinical and questionnaire data. The association of disease activity, social support and psychological distress with patients with CD was also evaluated based on the collected data., Results: A total of 162 patients with CD were enrolled. Compared with patients with CD in remission (CD-R), the patients with CD in activity (CD-A) had higher C reactive protein (CRP) (p=0.001), anaemia (p<0.001) and relapse rates in the last year (p<0.001). Independent samples t-tests indicated that the CD-A group reported lower Social Support Rating Scale scores and higher Symptom Checklist-90 scores than the CD-R group. Moreover, men with CD had lower somatisation (p=0.030) and anxiety (p=0.050) scores than women. In binary logistic regression models, the subjective support (beta=0.903, p=0.013), the clinical factors of CRP (beta=1.038, p=0.001) and psychological distress factors of anxiety (beta=1.443, p=0.008) and other (beta=1.235, p=0.042) were disease activity predictors., Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of the psychological distress and social support factors that may play a role in CD patients' health. Background: Cardiovascular disease disproportionately affects African Americans. Psychosocial factors, including the experience of and emotional reactivity to racism and interpersonal stressors, contribute to the etiology and progression of cardiovascular disease through effects on health behaviors, stress-responsive neuroendocrine axes, and immune processes. The full pathway and complexities of these associations remain underexamined in African Americans. The Heart of Detroit Study aims to identify and model the biopsychosocial pathways that influence cardiovascular disease risk in a sample of urban middle-aged and older African American adults., Methods: The proposed sample will be composed of 500 African American adults between the ages of 55 and 75 from the Detroit urban area. This longitudinal study will consist of two waves of data collection, two years apart. Biomarkers of stress, inflammation, and cardiovascular surrogate endpoints (i.e., heart rate variability and blood pressure) will be collected at each wave. Ecological momentary assessments will characterize momentary and daily experiences of stress, affect, and health behaviors during the first wave. A proposed subsample of 60 individuals will also complete an in-depth qualitative interview to contextualize quantitative results. The central hypothesis of this project is that interpersonal stressors predict poor cardiovascular outcomes, cumulative physiological stress, poor sleep, and inflammation by altering daily affect, daily health behaviors, and daily physiological stress., Discussion: This study will provide insight into the biopsychosocial pathways through which experiences of stress and discrimination increase cardiovascular disease risk over micro and macro time scales among urban African American adults. Background: Parent psychological distress during childhood cancer treatment has short- and long-term implications for parent, child, and family well-being. Identifying targetable predictors of parental distress is essential to inform interventions. We investigated the association between household material hardship (HMH), a modifiable poverty-exposure defined as housing, food, or utility insecurity, and severe psychological distress among parents of children aged 1-17 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) enrolled on the multicenter Dana-Farber ALL Consortium Trial 16-001., Methods: This was a secondary analysis of parent-reported data. Parents completed an HMH survey within 32 days of clinical trial enrollment (T0) and again at 6 months into therapy (T1). The primary exposure was HMH at T0 and primary outcome was severe parental distress at T0 and T1, defined as a score greater than or equal to 13 on the Kessler-6 Psychological Distress Scale. Multivariable models were adjusted for ALL risk group and single parent status., Results: Among 375 evaluable parents, one-third (32%; n = 120/375) reported HMH at T0. In multivariable analyses, T0 HMH was associated with over twice the odds of severe psychological distress at T0 and T1 HMH was associated with over 5 times the odds of severe distress at T1., Conclusions: Despite uniform clinical trial treatment of their children at well-resourced pediatric centers, HMH-exposed parents-compared with unexposed parents-experienced statistically significantly increased odds of severe psychological distress at the time of their child's leukemia diagnosis, which worsened 6 months into therapy. Purpose: Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are prone to suffering a higher incidence rate of depression, leading to poor quality of life. However, how cancer affects depression is unclear. This study aimed to examine whether the relationship between cognitive appraisal and depression is mediated by perceived stress and self-efficacy in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy., Methods: A total of 421 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy participated in this cross-sectional survey. Cognitive appraisal of cancer, perceived stress, self-efficacy, and depression were measured with the Perceived Life Threat Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, General Self-efficacy Scale and Hospital Anxiety, and Depression Scale-Depression Scale, respectively. Path analysis was performed to analyze the mediating effects of perceived stress and self-efficacy on the relationship between cognitive appraisal of cancer and depression., Results: Cognitive appraisal of cancer exerted direct (b = 0.066, SE = 0.020, p < 0.001, bias-corrected 95% CI = [0.027, 0.106]) and indirect (mediated by depression and insomnia) (b = 0.136, SE = 0.015, p < 0.001, bias-corrected 95% CI = [0.107, 0.167]) effects on depression. Perceived stress and self-efficacy were significant in mediating the relationship between cognitive appraisal of cancer and depression (b = 0.101, SE = 0.014, p < 0.001, bias-corrected 95% CI = [0.074, 0.132]; b = 0.021, SE = 0.006, p < 0.001, bias-corrected 95% CI = [0.006, 0.028], respectively). Additionally, a sequential mediating effect of perceived stress via self-efficacy was found, and the mediating effect size was 0.014 (p < 0.01, bias-corrected 95% CI = [0.010,0.034])., Conclusions: This study suggests that medical staff could prevent or relieve depression through improving self-efficacy or reducing perceived stress in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy., (© 2023.
